MY PERSONAL UPDATE ON THE EVENTS AS I SEE THEM IN GREECE AND ESPECIALLY ON THE GREEK ISLAND OF CRETE - KRETA
I have returned once again to the Greek Island of Crete. The new prices have amazed me. The cost of living has risen beyond the salary stuck at the same as two years ago! To rent an apartment long term on Crete now averages 500-600 euros per month, average salaries are 600 euros per month and usually only 6 months summer jobs are available, making the real salary worth 300 euro per month. The cheapest apartment I have stumbled across was 350 euros per month for a small room with some cooking facilities for snacks. If you are looking to rent an apartment on a per day or weekly basis, the cost for an inexpensive studio is 35 euros minimum per night. For 35 euros you will be able to rent an apartment for 2 - 4 persons. 2 persons would sleep on the beds in the kitchenette area and there would be a double bedroom or one with twin beds, plus a basic shower room. Crete was never as inexpensive as the other Greek Islands but since the introduction of the euro prices have soared out of all proportion! Car rental. If you wish to hire a car, the most inexpensive car rental company I found was offering the basic and old Seicento for 28 euros per day or if you were looking to rent a car for a week the weekly cost was 205 euro. To rent a slightly more modern or newer car such as a Fiat Punto you can rent one for 275 euros per week. The ever popular (and now very aging) Jeep rentals such as a Suzuki Vitara was on offer at 380 euros per week or 50 euros rental per day. You can of course rent a minibus, usually Fiat or Hyundai with 9-10 seats at 425 euros per week. Touring around Kreta I am also still hearing the usual horror stories regarding importing foreign cars into Greece. The Greek law still states that you can only keep your foreign registered car in Greece for 6 months, after this 6 months it must leave Greece for 6 months before it can re-enter. Failure to remove your car from Greece will leave you with your car being impounded plus a rather huge fine to pay. The alternative is to 'emigrate' to Greece and apparently you can bring all your personal possessions with you tax free and you should be offered special Greek plates for your car. I have not yet met any expat who has managed to achieve this. Please feel free to contact me if you have managed to do this, so that I may let others know exactly how it is done! Before leaving England, I contacted the Greek Embassy in London to ask how to do this, I spoke to a very abrupt Greek woman who informed me that I should not take my beloved English car into Greece, but instead buy a Greek one.
Greece have caught up quickly with the internet. There are wireless internet hotspots around the islands. Considering the amount of time I will spend in Greece and on the island of Crete, I went to OTENET to find out about a special phone card to put into my notepad computer. They are available now, the card acts as a phone and connects to the internet wherever GPRS is available, no land line is required. The cost per month seemed quite reasonable for such luxury, 35 euros per month but, always a but eh! You need a Greek tax number to purchase an internet card for your notepad computer, these are probably the easiest things to get in Greece (tax numbers that is!), then we discussed how to pay, I offered to pay for a years connection as the contract was for a minimum of one year. They wouldn't accept my English credit card for payments, only a Greek credit card will suffice and cash won't do at all! Before returning to Greece I was surfing a site regarding freedom of movement of people and their belongings within the EU community for EU members, obviously I misinterpreted the page and must find it again to find out exactly what can and can't be moved around within the EU member countries, specifically between England the UK and Greece and the Greek Islands.
As for the cats of Crete and Greece, you can see the village I have personally voted the top with regards to animal kindness click here! As you will see from some of the photos the cats are not subjected to the usual and the village has a cat that is over 10 years old!
